HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK MAUI 5-8-08 : Nowhere else in the world can you drive on a paved road from sea level to an elevation of 10,000 feet in less than 38 miles. The main feature of this part of the park is undoubtedly the famous Haleakalā Crater. It is huge: 11.25 km (7 mi) across, 3.2 km (2 mi) wide, and some 800 meters (2,600 feet) deep. The interior of the crater is dotted by numerous volcanic features, including large cinder cones. Two main trails lead into the crater from the summit area: the Halemau'u and Sliding Sands trails. Hikers in the crater can stay in one of three cabins (which need to be reserved through the park first). Each morning, visitors come to the summit of the volcano to watch the spectacular sunrise. More visitors come each afternoon to watch the equally amazing sunset. Now i my trip of course it was in the darn clouds but still one of the most interesting places i have ever been. Now i know what its like to be on another planet!

Maui Tropical Plantation : Our group took narrated tour takes you past fields of tropical fruits and flowers, we had plenty of great photo-op stops along the way. You'll see Hawaii's most popular crops as the tram rolls through the 60-acre working plantation: papaya, guava, mango, macadamia nuts, coffee, avocado, bananas, sugar cane, star fruit and more. We even learned a thing or two about husking a coconut!

Magnolia Plantation & Garden 8-3-08 : Magnolia Plantation and Gardens. Founded in 1676 by the Drayton family. It is the oldest public tourist site in the Lowcountry, and the oldest public gardens in America, opening its doors to visitors in 1872 to view the thousands of beautiful flowers and plants in its famous gardens. The visit today was during the heat of the summer when even the alligators know to hide and cool off in the shade! It was HOT!

Four Holes Swamp & the Angel Oak 8-2-08 : The Francis Beidler Forest was originally established to preserve 1,800 acres of old-growth swamp forest, one of only two stands of old-growth still left in the state. Most of the huge Bald cypress in this part of the swamp are in the neighborhood of 1000 years old. The oldest known tree on the sanctuary clocked in at 1500 years old! Also on this trip we stoped by the Angel Oak (John's Island, South Carolina) Reportedly the oldest thing -- living or man-made -- east of the Rockies, Angel Oak is a live oak tree aged approximately 1,500 years.

Asheville N.C. (Downtown after 5) 7-18-08 : Celebrating its 20th year, Downtown After Five enters the summer season in Asheville. The event takes place each third Friday of the month May- September. The event has a new location at Lexington Avenue at I-240. Free live music and dancing starts at 5 pm. This nights music was the Waybacks! IAO valley state park Maui 5-7-08 : History of Iao Valley Iao Needle (see left), a volcanic monolith 2,250 feet (686 m) high, soars nearly straigt up 1200 feet from the valley floor. This is widely considered a lookout for warriors of Maui and the view from the bottom is quite impressive. 'Iao Valley is the site of one of the Hawaii's most famous battles, the battle of Kepaniwai ("damming of the waters") in 1790 when King Kamehameha I destroyed the Maui army of Kalanikupule (his son) in an effort to unite the Hawaiian Islands. This was one of the first confrontations in the islands with use of cannon. It is said that the Iao river ran red with blood all the way to the ocean and that the number of warriors fallen held back the waters of the river, thus the name given to the battle.

Woods Bay & Lee state natural area 9-30-07 : This is a day trip to two South Carolina wildlife areas. Woods Bay is on of the one of the last remaining large Carolina Bays on the Atlantic Coastal Plain. Carolina Bays, elliptical depressions of various size scattered along the mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain, are among the Earth’s natural mysteries. Lee State Natural Area is located next to the scenic Lynches River. Both locations were very very dry from the lack of rain.
